Time for a break. I bought the Speedmetal HID kit from CycleGear for $55. After tucking in daughter earlier tonight I started. First challenge....no instructions in box. None On-line. Using this site and the HID conversion How-to section I had a good idea of what to do. The Speedmetal kit is a little different looking than the one shown here but similar.
Taking the old light out and putting in the new bulb was fairly easy. I cheated and used sharp scissors to make the rubber grommet cover fit over the new bulb and base.
Taking off the tank resulted in a big mess. When I unhooked the hose from the rear of tank gas poured out of the metal spout on top of the bottom tank under the battery. I scrambled around garage to find a pan or something but eventually opened garage and rolled her out to leak in driveway. I walked away before losing my temper. When I came back the gas had evaporated and I rolled her back in the garage. I finally figured out how to take off the other three hoses and gently put the tank aside. After some dry runs with the new harness I am ready to attach ballast and mount. It will be a tight fit to make sure nothing gets crimped. I hope to keep most of the wiring connections near the ballast under the plastic steering stem cover but it is already crowded because I had mounted the 35 watt driving lamps last year. A good addition but hoping the HID upgrade will be even better. And as a bonus I still have the driving lamps I can switch off and on.
Thanks to this web site I have made some great upgrades to this great motorcycle. My skill level is not to the level of some of these great folks who have put there work in the How-to section but it has been a healthy challenge to try, and so far, be successful on my own.
Before I get to cocky tho it is time for a break and I will work on finishing tomorrow. Hope all goes well. Maybe the gas smell will be gone from the garage by later today. :)
