Hi
I just purchased a 2007 V Star 1300 with 6000 miles on it . I've had the bike 3 weeks now and have added another 900 miles .
I live in Mich and have been riding a motorcycle for over 40yrs . For the past 27 yrs I've been riding a 1976 850 Norton . My wife and I have gotten a bit older and the Norton was no longer suitable for riding double and my wife asked that I get a bike we could both ride . A bit of research directed me to the V Star 1300 and 900 miles later , I couldn't be more pleased . The Bike came with the Blackhawk twin exhaust . I've added a tach , k & n filter and a new Bridgestone rear tire . I've changed the oil and adjusted the valves [ The Norton valves take about 40 min , I had 3 - 4 hrs in the V Star] .
Now the question , This thing idles at 1200 and doesn't like to run below 2200 rpms . Low gear will putt along at 1200 fine and 35 mph in 4th is ok [ about 2000 rpm ] with a little throttle finess . I don't run 5th unless the bike is running 50 mph or more . If I stick with these guidelines the motor will run smoothly and there will be no strange sounds coming from the drivetrain . If I try to run at a lower rpm I'll get a bit of surging and a " wish , wish washing machine noise from the drivetrain . The manual says shifting to 5 th at 32 is ok . I got the bike with 6000 miles on it and wonder if lack of power below 2000 is normal or maybe its an injection problem . I found a dyno chart online with SS Cycle on an intake modification they sell . It looked pretty short on hp below 2000 rpm . So , I would like to hear from you folks , Is this normal or otherwise ?
Just a postscript , This bike starts easily , has never stalled , is wonderfully balanced , handles great for a 700 lb bike , has so little vibration , is very comfortable [ added a drivers backrest ] , stops well enough and is much quicker than I expected - good power to 6000 rpm . Love this bike !
Thanks
George
