Finally got Maple back on the road today - it's been a looong winter! I'm happy to report that the Top Hats I installed in my fork springs have done the trick - absolutely no more CLUNK! For details, search for my post last fall "The Clunk - The Final Chapter".
For what it's worth, my own humble opinion is that the springs have been the source of the noise all along. True, there was/is a problem with stripped threads but I don't think that had anything to do with my Clunk. The Progressive springs helped because of the increased preload and heavier wire size. Extra and/or heavier viscosity fork oil helped to cushion the contact between spring and fork tube. That might explain why some of us had no noise while others, like me, had a real CLANK!, even with new fork oil. The Top Hats complement the fork oil fix to eliminate the problem for good!
I remain very disapointed in Yamaha not accepting responsibility for this issue from the start. I'm sure their engineers could have come up with the Top Hat fix if they had taken our feedback seriously. Total cost per unit about two bucks and a twenty minute install!
I made a set for jimbugme for his OEM springs and I hope he will report his results. Anyone else who needs more info on making up a set, feel free to ask.
Cheers, Doug
