Hi Boys & Girls,
It’s time for another episode of the Obvious Installer!
And today’s Obvious Install is: OEM passenger floorboards(yah, the ugly ones).
What you’re going to need:
5mm hex tool
Pliers – I used needle nose
Recommended:
Loctite
Suggested:
Torque wrench
Scissors or side cutters to neaten things up later
So let’s begin!
This is what you’ll get. The mounting brackets (STR-3D857-40-01) and the floorboards:

Let’s start with the right side. Remove the two 5mm bolts holding on the passenger pegs(they’re pretty tight, so be prepared to use some force):

And then the same thing for the left side:

Now back to the right side. Install the floorboard bracket with the two 5mm bolts you just removed and torque to 22 ft-lbs(I recommend using loctite to help secure the bolts):
NOTE: If your passenger is shorter in stature, see comments at the bottom for an alternative installation.

And again for the left side:

Now for the floorboard itself. On one end of the floorboard is an extra hole. Put the compression spring into it:

Here’s the compression spring in place:

Set the ball bearing on top of the compression spring:

Here’s the plate that will lock the floorboard in either the up or down position. The bearing will be forced into either one of the two holes by the spring to hold the floorboard in place:

Set the locking plate on top of the ball bearing. Note the orientation:

While holding everything together, slide the floorboard into the mounting bracket(we’re on the left side here):

Slide the pin through floorboard and bracket:

Here’s the pin sticking out the back. Notice the groove:

Here’s the circlip. It will clamp into the groove:

Use the pliers to clamp it into place:

Here it is clipped into place:

Fold the floorboard up. It should click into place and stay there:

Wow. The whiskers sticking out the bottom sure look terrible. I think they’re uglier than the hairs sticking out of Aunt Edna’s mole! We’ll deal with this later(the whiskers, not Aunt Edna).
And down. Once again it should click into place:

Do the same thing for the right side. Put in the spring:

Place the ball bearing:

And finally the locking plate:

Slide the floorboard into the mounting bracket:

Run the pin through:

The groove is visible:

Clamp the circlip into place with the pliers:

Fold up to make sure it locks into place:

Very ugly.
And down:

At least folded down it matches the front boards!

Now wasn’t that easy?
Remember the ugly whiskers? Let’s trim them off. I used side cutters:

Yah. That looks a little better. If you want to see some floorboards custom dressed up, check out what CaneMan did to his:

Pretty nice, eh?
Now bask in the glory of your new floorboards……………….. OK, that’s enough!
Throw your significant other on the back and go riding!
Alternative Install:
If your passenger is on the short side, you can mount the brackets on the opposite sides(left on the right side, etc.) so that the floorboard pivot is above and behind the mount holes. This will place the floorboards up and back a few inches, making it easier on shorter legs.
Here's a bike with the mounts reversed:

The 1100 brackets will work
The 1100 brackets will work as well if you can not find the 1300 brackets. You just have to mount them on the bag support bolts behind the footpegs.
Good To Know
Hey Johnny,
Thanks for the info.

Another excellent
Another excellent written/explained and photographed/walked thru install. Congrats!
My only addition to this install would be to put a little (I used amsoil synthetic), grease where the spring goes into, and on the ball end. Trust me, it won't gobble all over the place. (I'm a little OVER maintenence), but thought this would help.
Again, great writeup/story!
Good idea!
Hey Drag79Stang!
That's a good idea. Thanks for the input!

Passenger Floor Boards
When I purchased "Sally" I had these floorboards installed by the Yamaha dealer, thinking they would be a little more comfortable than the pegs. That was last March. Well, my wife finally took off with me on a 200 mile jaunt yesterday. Boy did she complain about having knee pain almost the whole ride. I didn't think much of it since she doesn't have the best knees-a little age, you know. So anyway, I got to looking at the situation with these floorboards and thought maybe I could lower them somehow. Then I discovered the dealer had mounted them upside down! I checked with various forum images and remembered this post. Sure enough the floorboards were mounted above the brackets! (You can see a picture: "CA Machine.") So thanks Boomer for taking the time to post these pictures, etc. I was able to use them to change boards around like they should be. We're going to try them out tonight. One never knows when one might be using one of these excellent posts or information.

Floor Boards
Rog, I can do that. Just ask Boom.

Hi Giddyup!
Glad it helped. The way your dealer installed them could benefit a person with shorter legs, as it would bring the boards up and back a few inches, but for the average rider, it would definitely scrunch up their legs.
Enjoy the ride!
